Nexium, which is available as Nexium 20mg and 30mg tablets, is a generic version of the brand-name drug Nexium. It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions caused by stomach acid.
The study, presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists annual meeting in San Diego, will evaluate whether the branded and generic versions of Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium) are equally effective for the treatment of GERD and other conditions.
Study participants are randomly assigned to either the branded version or generic version of Nexium. They were then followed up to determine the difference in symptom resolution, clinical cure rates, and treatment compliance over time.
Nexium is available as a delayed-release tablet that is taken 15-30 minutes before eating. Once taken, the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream and is rapidly and completely absorbed after a short period of time. This is because it is the same active ingredient used in the brand-name version of Nexium.
The study will focus on patients who are experiencing symptoms of GERD or other reflux conditions, who have been taking the drug for a year, and will also assess their response to treatment in relation to their GERD symptoms.
Nexium is a branded version of the drug Nexium which is taken for the treatment of GERD and other reflux conditions, including heartburn, acid reflux, and ulcers.
Dr. William Lister, a gastroenterologist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the lead author of the study, said the study's findings are preliminary. He said that the researchers did not have specific data on the branded version of Nexium.
“I would have liked to see the results in a larger, open study,” Dr. Lister said.
The study, which was presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists annual meeting in San Diego, included more than 1,000 participants.
John W. Farrar, M. D., director of the department of gastroenterology at the University of Chicago, said that the study results do not support the use of Nexium in patients with reflux disease. He noted that the researchers did not have specific data on the branded version of Nexium.
“We are continuing to conduct more studies to confirm the findings and we hope to publish them in the next issue of the journal,” Farrar said. The study will be published in the journalArchives of Internal Medicine.
The researchers used a computer-assisted design to evaluate participants' response to the treatment.
“The results showed no difference in symptom resolution, symptom relief, or symptom improvement among the branded and generic versions of Nexium,” Dr. W. J. Beecher, associate professor of gastroenterology and medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, who co-lead the study, said in a news release. “We are also planning to continue to evaluate the effectiveness of the branded version of Nexium in patients with GERD who have been taking the drug for a year.”
The study is the latest in a long-term investigation that involves the development and commercialization of new medicines for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The study is expected to be published in a year.
Beecher, an associate professor of gastroenterology and medicine, said that the study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of the branded and generic versions of Nexium in treating GERD and other conditions.
“We were interested in evaluating whether there is a difference in symptom resolution, symptom relief, or symptom improvement among the two drugs in patients who are taking the branded and generic versions of Nexium,” he said. “We were also interested in the ability of the brand-name version of Nexium to cause more benefit to patients with GERD and other conditions because it is a longer-lasting drug than the branded version of Nexium.”
Farrar said that the study's results do not support the use of the branded and generic versions of Nexium in patients with reflux disease.
“There are still many questions and it's important that the FDA approves generic drugs that are FDA approved for these uses,” he said.
